Data Analyst
Every conversion begins with mapping data from the source system to the target system. We take a data-driven approach to this process. The metadata is stored in a relational database that includes the necessary information required for each field being mapped.
ETL Developer
Data Mapper leverages metadata to streamline the coding process. Using Transact-SQL commands, the developer simply reads the transformation logic provided for each field and converts that into SQL statements. These statements are easy to develop and do not require specialized tool-specific syntax.
QA Tester
The QA tester also reads the specifications from the data analyst, to create code independent of the ETL developer, ending in comparative results. The system compares the results of these two efforts for records being converted and reports any differences found.

My responsibility as Project Owner of the conversion is to ensure we get the
data migration work done correctly and in a timely manner, while taking into account ongoing changes in the configuration of the new system that would affect conversion.
We are halfway through a claims system conversion and our team is on track to meet, and possibly, beat our timeline. Although we only started using the Data Mapper Tool
some time into the project, it has increased our velocity and accuracy significantly by providing key metrics that help our team focus on their progress on a daily basis.
The ability to quickly and accurately share information is of paramount importance between our staff who have knowledge of the source data, and the consultants whose
expertise is the new claims system. The Tool provides a source field mapping feature that allows our staff to reference profiled table/column data and copy that data
directly into the transformation logic. If additional transformation rules need to be applied they are added as comments. The Business Analyst, Data Analyst, Developer
and QA teams have transparency and direct access to the same information so there is maximum process efficiency.
The Tool is intuitive and our learning curve was
only slower because we were already partway through the project. Once we determined how our process would best work with the Tool, we made some adjustments to the status
labels, and saw a decrease in testing errors as a result of our team creating unit tests for each mapped column. Communication and tracking within the Tool are very effective
as we are able to pose, and answer, questions situationally so that relevant information is kept together. Where the Data Mapper Tool really shines is in its flexibility.
When we have had to pivot and change our process, the Tool has easily changed with us, with almost no time taken away from the project work. The Reports available in the
Tool cover every need you may have but are also editable for further flexibility. The Data Mapper Tool has been invaluable to our project and I firmly believe we would not
be where we are without it.
